History

The August Winter & Sons' success story started in 1929. August Winter, a pipefitter by trade, with his two sons, Roy and Wally Winter, started August Winter & Sons. Roy had worked as a sheetmetal worker for a local contractor and Wally was a pipefitter. With minimal resources and some unshakable ideas about quality, the three men started their business. The depression proved to be too great a financial challenge for the young business, and the Winters were temporarily forced to close. All three moved to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, to work as tradesmen at the local shipyard.

Following World War II, the men were back with renewed enthusiasm. They built a new building and re-established August Winter & Sons in 1946. During the early years, August Winter & Sons positioned itself in the residential market. In 1951, it received a contract for heating, ventilation and air conditioning at a local school. From that point forward, the company progressed more and more into the commercial, institutional and industrial markets.

In 1961, August Winter & Sons' continual growth extended into the plumbing, industrial sheetmetal and piping markets. August Winter & Sons geographical service area has continued to grow. Today, it provides services to customers throughout Northeast and Central Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

In 1971, a new building was built in Appleton's Industrial Park. Since that time, three additions have been added to the facility. August Winter now has a total of 39,000-square-feet with 29,000-sq.-ft. of shop fabrication and 10,000-sq.-ft. of office and support area.

Employment at August Winter & Sons has risen steadily over the past twenty-five years. Fueled by revenue growth of 7-10%, August Winter's workforce has grown from 60 in 1975, to currently more than 225.

Our expert engineering staff accommodates each small detail through the use of computer-aided design (CAD). CAD significantly reduces the time needed to originate and modify designs. Blueprints that used to take days, take hours. With this ability to detail plans, it has allowed us to prefabricate plumbing, heating and sheetmetal to meet the aggressive construction schedules of today's builders.

When the best technology is coupled with the finest and most durable materials available ... assembled by ASME-certified technicians ... the product that results-whether it is a custom fabrication of a tank, pipe, fittings or mechanical contracting-is the best the industry has to offer. Every project gets the same attention to detail, the same skilled craftsmanship, and the same intense level of quality control and inspection.

August Winter & Sons opened a branch office in Wausau in 1999. Like the Appleton facility, it provides service to the commercial, institutional and industrial markets. The heating & air conditioning service department in Wausau is expanding to better serve customer needs.
